An Opportune Time

When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. (Luke 4:13 NIV)

Jesus gave us a wonderful example of how to combat the temptation of the enemy by using the word as His primary weapon. Luke, ever the detailed historian, gives us an important detail as the temptation in the wilderness comes to a close. The devil left Jesus “until an opportune time.” One translation says he left Jesus “for a season.” The takeaway: Jesus hadn’t experienced temptation by the enemy for the last time.

Living an overcoming life as a follower of Jesus isn’t a one and done deal. The enemy of our soul will come back at opportune times and try to pull us back down. If that’s happened to you, you aren’t alone and that’s one of the many things I love about Jesus – He identifies with us in His humanity – He struggled like we struggle, and He overcame. Every time.

I heard this just this morning, and realized I’d never ‘seen’ that before. Twice in one day, makes you go, “hmmmm.”

  2. Eden S says:

And so our friend Peter reminds us “to be sober, be vigilant for your adversary walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Resist him steadfast in the faith knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by others in the faith throughout the world”.
